So… how tough would It be to give away $30 Mill???

We watched Brewster’s Millions a few weeks ago, and the movie made me think about what it would take to give away that much money with the restrictions he had.

First of all, I was ticked that he didn’t have a plan, and didn’t confide in people to the extent he was able to confide. So, I reasoned the first thing I would do would be to surround myself with advisors that knew my mission and were dedicated to helping me to achieve my mission in the most effective and efficient way possible. Then, together we would create a comprehensive plan to give away the money.

You’ve heard me speak of my spider plant, the offspring are multiplying at such a rate that I am at a loss as how to give them all away. In some ways this spider plant reminds me of the rash bets that Brewster made, expecting them to fail, they succeeded, multiplied and paid amazing dividends. And like Brewster, I’m having a difficult time dispersing my wealth. Strange though it is, my spider plant is teaching me the same lesson Brewster learned – it’s difficult to give away wealth.

So, I’m opening the question up to you – how do I share the wealth of my spider plants? All suggestions will receive; you guessed it, a spider plant start! That is, assuming you live in the Continental US and that your State allows plants from another state, I know Cali doesn’t – but I’ll still accept your ideas!

The proof to Skinnydipping arrived today!

We've been running so hard the past few days that I hadn't checked for mail. Chris brought in a UPS package that I didn't see until my Publisher called to ask if I'd gotten my proof copy yet. Opening my newly discovered package I found a proof copy of Skinnydipping. I have to say, I was pretty impressed to be holding my finished book in my hands. How do I know you may ask? I know not because the pear, flowering plum or cherry blossom trees are all blooming, or that the Hyacinth's, Daffodils or Tulips are all pushing out of the ground and turning their faces upwards. I know not because of the buds on the trees or the rains that are turning everything a lovely shade of green. It's not even because of the variety of birds visiting the bird feeder. I know it's Spring because our alarm clock is back.

Every year, like clock work, the Flickers begin to peck the down spouts on the house, at 7am. That may seem late to those that rise earlier, but working from home has changed my bedtime, and my getty up time. And being woken by a jackhammer at 7am is not my idea of the best sound to wake up to. So why is he pecking on the down spouts? He's looking for a mate. Apparently, the louder the sound he makes, the more appealing he is as a mate. Go figure. Before we got the new tractor he liked the exhaust pipe on the old tractor. Woke up the whole neighborhood with that that amplifier!

So, I know Spring is here because of the Flicker. Punxsutawney Phil has nothing on the Flickers announcement of Spring!!

Over the weekend we attended a conference. While the speakers were doing their thing, there were several people painting their interpretations of what was being said. One of the artists really caught my eye and I watched as his painting unfolded. Saturday afternoon I asked him to tell me what the painting meant to him. It brought on an interesting discussion that we picked up on and off the rest of the day. As we were walking out the door Saturday eve, he came up to me and asked me if I would like the painting. I jumped at the invitation and said yes. Thought I'd share my good fortune with all of you.

Hope in Haiti

Friends of ours have been active in Haiti for many years. They had a regularly scheduled trip planned prior to the earthquake. They financially and physically support an orphanage in the Haiti that is normally a 12 hour hike up the mountains. Because of the earthquake, the trip was delayed by the airlines until Feb. 20th, and when they arrive, they will not be able to go into the mountains to the orphanage but will instead be about an hour North of Port au Prince helping to rebuild the facility of a church they partner with and usually stay at when they arrive and depart from Haiti. Here is their description form their Facebook page:

HOPE in Haiti is dedicated to serving the children of Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
This non-profit organization based in Monroe, Washington planted its roots in 1987 with a desire in the hearts of Dick and Dixie Montgomery to share the love of Christ by taking their family to work with children in Haiti. After two years in an orphanage helping the poorest of the poor, the Montgomery family came back to the States ever changed, and carrying memories that would drive the creation of the child sponsorship program nearly two decades later.

Sorry I've been absent from blogland lately. Chris and I have added a new business to our repertoire. It's a technology company that produces a live beverage that you blast when you are ready to drink. So on Thursday we picked up the mail. And in the mail was a letter from one of the Founders and President of the company, congratulating us on the new level we have reached: 5 star bronze. Also included was the 5 Star bronze pin. Both Chris and I were shocked, and surprised. I even called to make sure there was no mistake. There wasn't. In just a few short weeks we have moved up 10 ranks. Blows us away. And the fun part of it, we've been having fun doing something we love to do - talk to people and help them to live their dreams. Very cool. So, I'm sharing our joy with all you in blogland. Couldn't find a picture of the Bronze pin so I'm posting a picture of the Diamond level pin - we haven't reached that level, yet. It's only a matter of time!

I enjoyed lunch with a good friend on Friday who told me she and her family are celebrating the Chinese New Year this weekend. Because I didn't know all that much about the Chinese New Year, I went and did some reading on the festivities.

I was listening to the sound track for Surf's Up today. It got me thinking about the plot line, that a guy doesn't believe he can do great things till someone else believes he can. Which got me thinking about the amazing people Chris and I have in our lives who encourage us and help us believe we can do all the amazing things that we dream of, and the things that we don't think that we can do. Which lead me to thinking about mentors. Yes, I know I wrote about this concept a few weeks back (here, here and here), but it's popping up again so I guess there's more to learn, more to share.

One of the concepts that I learned when I took The Art of Hearing God was that your floor is the ceiling of those who teach you. That the decision who will lead the herd in the next year is determined by where the Alaskan Elk eats in the Spring time. Preparation and input are everything. They will determine your results. So, the question is, when you are preparing, when you are learning something new, when you are sitting under a mentor, are you gonna settle for less than the absolute best, or are you gonna find the very best, learn all you can and then again look for the best to teach you?

We've decided, we're going for the best. And then we'll find the best and go for it again.

I caught up with a friend over a cup of coffee the other day.

Pretty amazing guy really. He was the youngest person to reach store manager at the company he works for. He was considered to "Goldenboy" and was given many challenging stores and assignments. He met and conquered each challenge quickly, and ruthlessly. He trained many of the companies current store managers. As I said, he was considered the Goldenboy.

All that success didn't come without a price. He was blindsided when his first marriage ended. He had to have stomach surgery because most of his stomach was gone. His knees are shot because his competitiveness extended into martial arts.

So, with that as a background, you'll understand my surprise, and my joy, when he commented that everything he had done wasn't as important as the life he now leads and the choices he makes. The pride he takes in his relationship with his two teenage sons. The peace that he now walks in. The ability to say no, and not to chase after the brass ring simply because his identity was so tied to work or being there first. He's learned that who his is is much more than his achievements. And that he wished that he could share the fruit of those lessons with some of the men that he trained up.

And that's what it's all about. That we can share the things that we have learned with those who are following in our footsteps. They don't have to be younger than we are, simply on the path we've gone down.

Those are the people I am trying to surround myself with - people who are willing to invest in me, and people who are willing to allow me to invest in them. Some are younger, some are older, but the desire is the same - to learn from someone else's successes and mistakes, and go further.

May you be lucky enough to travel with people who are willing to invest in you and allow you to invest in them.

A few days ago a friend shared a dream he has for our community; To help people, to encourage them and to bring about personal growth. Later in the day we were having a discussion and I realized that the greatest hindrance to his achieving this dream is... him. He is so fixed on being right, that he doesn't make room for anyone else's opinion or input.

A few days later I was listening in on a conversation where the three parties involved were discussing the same concept, but each one of them was so adamant that they were right they weren't able to hear the others. The conversation dissolved into a "I know more than you know" pissing match.

Monday, Chris and I saw Avatar. The Na'vi Chief makes the statement that other Dreamwalkers had come but they were so full that the Na'vi were prevented from pouring into them. He was saying that the scientist that came thought they had it all figured out. That they had all the answers and that the "savages" couldn't teach them anything.

The common thread I saw in all of these was that we tend to think we know best/all. I am guilty of it myself. I constantly have to remind myself that it's not all about me, that I have freely given up the right to be right. Because if I push to be right all the time, then I push away the very people I want to be around. The very people I want to help form and shape me. That's too high of a price tag for me.

I choose to not have to be right, to not have to know everything so that I can be in relationship with others. So that they can help form and shape me, and hopefully honor me by allowing me to add to who they are.

Earlier I was talking to a friend. He'd been slimed by a good friend, who, at that moment didn't see him for who he is and had to tell him how rotten of a human being he was. While they resolved the issue, my friend was still feeling the effects and chose to fight back by calling several people that he trusts, and asking them to "speak into the atmosphere" how they saw him. Wow. Love that idea and that way of fighting. Totally made my day.

Yesterday, Chris and I saw Avatar. Great movie. On many levels. Like The Matrix and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, it impacted me deeply. A concept that is spoken about several times is the concept of "I see you." It's not just words, it's not just a description of what's going on, but rather a short hand way of saying "I know who You are. I see who you are with my heart. I accept you as you are, with all your strengths and shortcomings, and I choose to be in relationship with you." It's a powerful concept.

So back to my friend. What he was calling for was to have someone he trusts to "see" him, and to remind him, and the world around us, who he really is.

What about you? Are you feeling the need to be reminded who you are? Allow me to remind you of a few of the basics:

You are you. You are special. There is no one else on this earth, past, present or future who can fill your shoes.
You are important. Important to your family, your friends, co-workers and the person you happened to smile at today.
Your unique mix of gifts, talents and abilities are essential. Not just to your family, friends and co-workers, but to our world. It wouldn't be the same without you.
The world needs to hear your laughter, marvel at the wisdom you contain and feel the embrace only you can offer.

So, pass it on. Make your day, by making someone else's day.

This week I read a quote by Steven Covey that got me thinking. He said:

Live out of your imagination, not your history.

This simple concept sent my thoughts dominioning, with the final thought being my future isn't defined by my past successes or mistakes. I can do something more than all the previous good stuff and the bad stuff that I have done or thought. Yes, both my previous successes and failures will influence my future, but they do not define my future.

Later in the week a friend sent me a message on Facebook that reminded to that God desires to bless us all BEYOND all that we ask or imagine. I've always liked that verse, not just because it reminds us that God desires to bless us BEYOND all that we can think or imagine, not just because I have the ability to imagine a lot, but because it is an invitation. We are being invited to dream big. To present before our Heavenly Father things that there is no way that we could possibly do without His help, without His unlimited resources. I love the story of David desiring to build a place on earth for the Glory of the Lord to rest. That hadn't been God's plan. But, it was David's deepest desire. And God, desiring to show His friend David how much he loved him, how much he valued his opinion, input and desires, said yes.

So what happens to the man that God says yes to? He co-labors with God to design the House of the Lord. He amasses all the materials needed to build the house. He forms relationships with those that have the resources needed. His son is chosen to carry on his work and to follow in his footsteps. And he makes history. Regardless of his past mistakes.

Are you living out of your imagination? Are you accepting God's challenge to challenge Him to do BEYOND all that you can think or dream of? I am.

We watched My life in Ruins New Years eve. Cute movie and a great way to leave 2009. A line in the movie caught my ear: You are looking for obstacles rather than looking for magic.

That made me wonder "What am I looking at? Am I focused on why I can't do something or do I focus on the reality that I have the power to engage in something magical?" One of the great truths Chris and I learned in the first decade of the 21st Century is that what you focus on you attract. It could also be said that what you focus on is all that you see. And that's what was happening in the movie, Georgia was looking only at the superficial, focusing only on her life not being what she wanted it to be. She's blinded from seeing what she really wants because she's focused on what she thinks she wants. By the end of the movie, she realizes that being in Greece with the people and the history she loves, is what she really wants. She shed's the expectations she has picked up along the way, recognizes and embraces what is really important to her. In 2010 may you shed the expectations you have placed on yourself, and those others have placed on you and begin to live the "magical" life that you desire. And enjoy a little ice cream along the way....

How deep are your roots?

I have previously written about a very prolific spider plant that I have, and the other plants that have come out of it. At Thanksgiving I gave away about 24 starts. A few days later we visited one of the recipients in their new home and I saw how her starts had taken. She'd placed then in a deep glass of water which had allowed nice long roots to form and grow. As I looked at them, I realized that the starts I had at home were in jelly jars that caused the roots to form in tight shallow knots. Looking at them I understood that I needed to move my starts to deeper glasses before I planted them. The picture above shows them in their new, temporary, homes. While they are ready to be planted in soil, I realized they need a longer root structure. Which got me thinking about my life... what areas have I crammed myself into too small of a place to allow deep and healthy growth. Growth that will sustain me when I move from my places of training.

This is my brain... a short tour of what has been passing through of late…

Much has been happening lately, some having to do with the Thanksgiving celebration, some having to do with the upcoming Christmas celebration. While I haven’t been blogging lately, a lot has been passing through my brain.

I’m reading several interesting books at the moment. I’m reading a biography of the band Coldplay. Very much enjoying it, and dipping my toe into their music. Like those of you who are more familiar with their music than I, Yellow has become a favorite. I’m a lyrics girl, but that isn’t what has captured my attention. It’s the sound. I love Chris Martin’s lead vocals and the transparency in his voice. And the riff plucked out by Jonny Buckland is memorable, haunting, soaring and grounding all at the same time.

I’ve been studying Isaiah 22:15-23 and am stunned that God would choose to use someone’s bad situation; the Israelite girl that has been captured in war, but granted much so favor in her mistresses life so that she can suggest that healing would be found in the Prophet who lives in Israel. And the guy, not just any guy, but the guy in charge of the Syrian war machine takes her advice and goes, bearing gifts from his king. And he is healed by God. Why? As “a testimony that God resides in Israel”. That blows my mind, but then I realized that this general almost misses out on his miracle because he is accustomed to being treated a certain way and expects that level of deference from Elisha. But Elisha sends a messenger with his instructions for his healing. The general is actually upset, and leaves. But is calmed down and persuaded by his servants to follow the directions of the Prophet. Once he lets go of his expectations, humbles himself and follows directions, he is healed and his life is changed. So that made me think, what have I missed out on because I had expected it to look a certain way or come at a certain time or from a specific person...

I’ve also been reacquainting myself with Ester and with David and their education in the courts of Persia and Israel. The protocol required to approach the king, or in David’s case, the respect he had for whom God had placed in authority over the land and the people, and how that respect guided him in not killing Saul when he had the chance while Saul was chasing David with the intent to kill him. I have been learning their lessons, and finding places they apply in my life.

And movies…

I’ve been thinking about the change in Tony Stark as he realizes there is more to life than living for your own pleasure (Ironman).
Seeing life, balance, joy and love come into a lonely, bitter, hard woman (The proposal).
Hearing a new sound released on the earth that conveys so much more than we understand at the present moment (Close encounters of the third kind).
Been reminded of our transforming abilities (Transformers and Revenge of the fallen), not just in ourselves but our affect on the situations, circumstances and people we interact with.
Witnessing the unconventional choices that lead to victory and bond a group of green cadets into a highly respected team throughout the Federation (Star Trek).
Understanding that the concept of an everlasting love is being released to a generation that didn’t have a way to understand the concept (The Twilght series).

Music…

Smiling and feeling free and light listening to Popcorn (the version recorded by Hot Butter).
Experiencing the unbound joy in the rendition of Joyful Joyful sung by the St Francis choir (Sister Act 2).
Hearing Perry Como swing and encourage with Actuate the positive (Blast from the past).
The underdog champion theme that Rock and roll pt2 carries with it (The replacement players).
The sheer happiness of youth in Venus and Cruel summer (Bananarama).
The breakthrough carried in Whip it (Devo) and Youth of the Nation (POD).

Of being with friends, old and new that pour into me and allow me to pour into them. Being changed by my interaction with them.

Joining my efforts to those of other like minded individuals and seeing the synergistic results come forth.

Hearing and seeing the Lord speak as He chooses to speak. Of choosing to spend my time in His presence. Being encouraged, and changed, in ways I see at that moment, and ways that are hidden from me, when I do.

Somehow I was recently introduced to the Hanna Montana song The climb. It’s from the Hanna Montana movie. I was impressed enough that I ordered the movie from the library. Last night I finally got around to watching it. I have to say I really enjoyed it, on many levels. The story is excellent, it has great values and great music. In short the story is about the choices that Milie/Hanna is making and the choices she needs to make to have the life that she wants.

This week Chris and I had the pleasure of seeing an old friend. He’s just made some decisions, some choices that will affect not just the near future, but also the rest of his life. The decision he needed to make was a difficult one to make but once it was made he walked with a lightness and a freedom that was a joy to see.

And that’s what it’s like when we make the right choice, the right decision. Everything is lighter. We no longer feel like we’re climbing uphill. We are filled with hope.

I enjoyed lunch with a friend who was unsettled about a course of action she had set herself on. She had no peace in the course of action she had decided upon. Once she understood that this decision was one she’d made on her own and would be doing in her own strength, she dropped the plan she’d made, and like my other friend, she began to walk in peace.

In the movie, Milie’s dad hijacks her out of the fast paced glamorous lifestyle of life as Hanna Montana and takes her back home to Tennessee to “detox” her from Hanna Montana. What do you need to detox from? What is causing you to spin in circles. To carry more than you need to, or should be carrying? What choices do you need to make to make your life reflect your highest dreams and expectations??? I’d love to hear…

Preparing for thanksgiving I was looking for the Jewish prayer that is translated "Blessed are you O Lord our God, King of the universe, who has kept us alive and sustained us, and enabled us to reach and enjoy this day" and I came upon this Thanksgiving prayer by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. The English translation reads:

"In the days of the pilgrims, the Puritans, when they arrived at these safe shores, suffered hunger and cold. They sang and prayed to the rock of their salvation. And you, standing by them, roused the caring of the natives for them, who fed them turkey and corn and other delights. Thus you saved them from starvation, and they learned the ways of peace with the inhabitants of the land. Therefore, feeling grateful, they dedicated a day of Thanksgiving each year as a remembrance for future generations. ... Thus do we thank you for all the good in our lives ..."

Earlier this week a friend observed that this day of thanksgiving is a day where the entire nation is united in thanksgiving. However we acknowledge this day, to whatever degree we keep it, we are united in thanksgiving.

May you be blessed on this day. May you experience unity and thanksgiving for this past year as well as an anticipation for what this coming year holds. May next year find you stunned to new levels as you remember all that has happened from this day to our next National day of thanksgiving.

Inspired by a bay...

On our way to the condo we passed an inlet where the water was smooth and calm. Looking out towards the ocean, I saw that beyond the opening to the bay, the waves were turbulent. The contrast was marked.

Seeing such a contrast reminded me of Steve's sermon that morning. We'd stopped to visit friends on our way down, they Pastor a church in Vancouver. Steve was teaching on the disciplines of silence and solitude. Thinking about that bay this morning gave me a visual picture of what he had been describing. The effects of time spent alone with God in solitude or in silence is like that bay – peaceful. Quiet. Smooth. Restful. Even though life may be happening just beyond, where you are, there is only His presence and His peace.

Teamwork

Sitting watching the waves I began thinking of how we rely on each other and the talents and abilities that we each carry, and that when we do, unity and teamwork prevail.

I won't even try to expalin how I got here by watching waves But I will share where I went with that thought.

I love Sifi. Love action movies, but not blood and guts movies, and more often than not I have to stay away from stories based on real life events because I “tilt” But I love movies like the latest Star Trek, Ironman, both Fantastic Fours and both Transformers, just to name a few. What got me thinking about teamwork as I watched the waves was a scene from GI Joe. The Joe's have gotten over their attitude about Duke and Ripcord joining the team and they are beginning to work together. Each member has a specialty, a field they excel in. And as they work together they begin to trust and rely on each other.

That made me think about the people I've joined forces with, so to speak, to accomplish a common purpose. As we spend more time together, not only do we begin to rely on the others gifts, talents and abilities, but the glue that bonds us together seeps out and creates in us, trust.

Without that trust, we can't accomplish all that is on our hearts to do, we aren't nearly as strong, and we don't allow each person to function fully in their field of expertise.

In those relationships where you are working together for a common purpose, is there trust? If not, how can you change the atmosphere from distrust to one of trust?

We had the honor and the privilege of attending our friends Vic and Jo's 60th wedding anniversary celebration this past weekend. They are amazing people. They inspire us - not just because they have made it 60 years, but because of who they are.

They are both generious people. With their time, talents, knowledge and abilities. But mostly with their love. For each other and for those lucky enough to be their children and their friends.

We're at the ocean this week. The first thing I did when we walked into our condo was open the sliding glass door facing the ocean. I love the sound of the ocean. The roar, the crash, the rhythm. It's relaxing and exhilarating all at the same time.

This morning I sat mesmerized watching the waves form and race for shore, and I noticed that the most interesting and beautiful waves that formed off shore, the ones that captured my attention, came to shore with only a fraction of the power they had displayed and the destruction they had promised. By the time they hit the shore line, their power had spread out and covered a wider part of the shore.

That made me start thinking about the storms we weather in life. Sometimes the waves we see descending on us with their loud roar and high forming waves immobilize us. We get caught up in the destruction we see headed our way, and forget that waves that form that far from shore hit with less power.

There are other times when we don't see the other waves that are forming beside the one that's got our entire attention, until it crashes into the first wave and neutralizes its power.

Sometimes, a wave will form very close to shore and hit with unexpected force. But we have to realize that with the unending rhythm and motion of the ocean of our life, the pain and the destruction is only temporary. The following waves will wash away the debris, and time will cause a softening to the hard edges left behind.

The constant motion of the water is soothing, and it's cleansing. Enjoy the sound of the ocean in your life.

Driving home from lunch with a friend, I passed a garden shop that specializes in fountains. The light was just perfect so I stopped to take some pictures. They have a whole green house where they keep all their fish. It was peaceful in the fish house and I enjoyed walking the grounds hearing the water fall from many different fountains. We've been holding on to old cell phones looking for a worthy cause to donate them to. My sister told me about Cell Phones for Soldiers. You can send in or drop off your old cell phone and it is recycled with the funds used to purchase a phone card with one hour of talk time for a soldier. You can also list a soldier to receive a card, donate cash or sign up to become a drop off point. Pretty amazing program. For more details click here.

So I read a post my nephew wrote the other day, you can read it here, about how God chooses the least to turn the world upside down. My free translation. Just after that, I responded to a Facebook question:
Leave a ONE WORD comment that you think describes me. It can only be one word. No more. Then copy and paste this on your wall so that I may leave a word about you....

The comments that I received surprised me. They humbled me. In my wildest expectations they are how I would want people to see me or think of me.

So that lead me back to Andy's post. Realizing how God sees us, and what we can do for Him when we're in tune with Him, and how we can affect people, because we reflect Him and are in tune with Him. Regardless of how we feel about ourselves.

So - in your wildest imagination, what would you like people to say when they describe you?

Encourage yourself...

I was talking with a friend the other day about a book that she had just finished by Bill Johnson called Strengthen yourself. It's concept that Bill speaks about often - remembering the things the Lord has told you, the promises and how He thinks of you. This is a practice that David modeled and consistently and consciously engaged in. When the people around him began to trash him or to doubt him, he turned his thoughts and his heart to what God had told him.

Today, I read John Paul's October eletter, yes, I'm a bit behind in my reading, and he addresses the same subject. You can read it for yourself here. When we teach The Art of Hearing God, I like to have the album I Am: 365 Names, Attributes and Characteristics of God playing. This album is John Paul reading 365 names, attributes and characteristics of God. There is power in this album. Not only does it set the mood for the class, but it turns our hearts and minds toward God and enables our Spirits to catch what the Spirit is saying and how He's moving. For several years this album or the instrumental version, The breath of I AM, have been part of my 24/7 soaking music. BTW - if you're interested, you can find the album here .

Back to my point... this practice of remembering the things that God has said to me has become so important that I have added scripture and promises to some of the photography I have taken and used them as book marks and as reminders hanging on the walls. There are no less than a dozen promises surrounding me at my desk. One of the things I have done is to take scripture and pray it over myself, and several years later I am seeing the fruits of that scripture in my life. This concept of encouraging myself has become so important to me that I make it a conscious effort to place reminders everywhere.

Take my new phone for instance. Chris bought me a My Touch, it's an android phone very smiler to an iPhone. I love it. I've set up the wallpaper to show a photograph of Antelope cave. I believe it's in Arizona somewhere. What strikes me about this picture is that there is a shaft of light that comes down from the roof and illuminates the entire cave. This is a visual prayer that reminds me that this is my prayer about God illuminating me, every part of me, as well as a prayer that this is what I do when I walk into a room or a situation. When I selected my new ring tone, I selected a song that impacted me the first time I heard it and expressed the cry of my heart - Where You go I'll go. I needed to get a shell for my phone, and rather than pick one off the shelf, I designed my own. It has promises on it as well as the scripture that I've been praying over myself for several years. The colors are purple and green, reminding me of my royal heritage and inheritance and the growth that I have achieved and the growth yet to come.

Since I’m a guest writer here on Yvonne’s site, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Marty, I’m 20 young years, and I live on a farm in Iowa. I am currently working towards an RN degree, and have found the work very rewarding and inspiring. The number one question I get asked is, “What do you write about?” I have no answer. I don’t understand what makes me write or gives me inspiration, but I do know that it has a lot to do with God. As I sit in the morning with my coffee, I enjoy reading from His word, allowing Him to teach and direct the path of my life. So, here are a few thoughts from today:

When I awoke this morning, I could hear the thunder gently whispering in the distance. As I laid there, I noticed how it slowly was getting more vocal as it were arguing with itself in the heavens. Getting ready for the day, the house was suddenly shaken by a clap of thunder so loud, its deafening presence shook the windows.This scenario reminded me of how our relationships can be with the people around us. Maybe your spouse is working late… again. Maybe your child refuses to do their homework. Maybe the groceries you picked up at the supermarket were on sale, but when you got to the register, were double the price. All sorts of little circumstances happen everyday, all kinds of conversations take place, and sometimes we need to address the situation.

We tell the lady at the supermarket we are positive they were a different price – the thunder gently rolls in the distance. She apologizes, and calls a manager that is apparently taking a break. Impatiently, you mutter how long this is taking – the thunder increases forcefully, getting closer. The manager appears, nonchalantly telling you that it was the generic brand that was on sale. You complain even louder, allowing them to know this is your last time to shop here – the thunder claps.

I know this is an extreme situation, but allow yourself to think of the way the thunder approaches every time you find yourself in these situations. Keep these little encounters with thunderstorms in control, never allowing the situation to get out of control. By keeping the thunder in the distance, gently whispering, everyone involved will be happier...

Last Friday at this time I was teaching The Art of Hearing God in Plains MT. The material itself is amazing. I really enjoy teaching every part of it, seeing peoples faces light up with understanding. Seeing the Spirit move in peoples lives. I enjoy the connection that happens when an intense experience is shared, a time where both parties are transparent, open and reaching to be the best that they can be as well as helping others to become the best that they can be. Possibilities and destiny collide in the atmosphere.

The material is intense, not just for the teachers, Rob has taught this 21 hour long class alone, but also for the students. The course impacts students on several levels - on the physical level there is a lot of sitting, and then you don't realize you haven't moved because you were focusing so hard that it's only when move that you realize how long it's been since you moved. In addition, your concentrating, hard, and there's a lot of writing as well, not just to fill in your workbook but these nuggets of truth just keep dropping from heaven. And you have to catch as many of them as possible.

On the Spiritual level, there is so much information being thrown at you, there is a reason we warn you at the beginning of the class that you will feel like you are drinking from a fire hose. None of the material is new, but the way that it is pieced together and the dots that are connected have the effect of a nuclear bomb going off in your Spirit. Things that never made sense before now make sense. New insights and questions arise. You alternately move from being pleased with where you're at to regretting your past mistakes, to realizing how far you need to go. And through it all there is no condemnation, only encouragement to become all that you were created to be.

In this atmosphere hopes are shared, fears are expressed and released, friends and family come to mind, change is in the air, caffeine is a requirement and staying late to soak up whatever you can is imperative. I don't know if that's a better description for me as the teacher or of the students... All I can say is that I walked out of my Art of Hearing God class a changed person, and that change has inspired me to become a teacher, to strive to be a living example of these materials and an encourager to those who are impacted in a similar way.

Are you bored with your life? Come, take the class... and hold on, it's a wild ride.

Now that's a piece of ginger!

I returned from Montana on Monday, more on that in later posts, but all of us who went got sick so I've spent the week recovering. I really haven't had a appetite since Sunday so I've been drinking chicken broth simmered with ginger, but I ran out of ginger so my wonderful husband ran to the store for me. It wasn't till the next morning that I got around to unpacking the ginger he bought me... and saw that it was the size of a dinner plate! I had to laugh. This was his way of telling me that he loves me and making sure I wouldn't run out again.

In beating this cold I was reminded of all the old remedies passed down from my grandmother - eating raw white onions, the only other thing I was craving, drinking hot liquids, using saline in my nose, and gargling with hot salt water. Not to mention plenty of sleep. I'm definitely on the mend, and don't plan to revisit a cold or entertain the flu the rest of the season. May you and yours prosper and enjoy amazing health this "cold and flu season"!

Ballykissangel

Chris and I found a new series that we have been enjoying. It ran for six years, 1996-2001, but we've only just been introduced. It's called Ballykissangel, named after the fictional village where it takes place. The name is Irish, "Baile Coisc Aingeal", meaning "The town of the fallen angel". We enjoy it because it gives us a glimpse of life in Ireland, I'm dying to go back, but it's also shown us a bit about ourselves.

There are two Priests involved in the story, at least in season one as that's all we've finished. Father Peter Clifford, an English Priest sent to BallyK as a curate and Father MacAnally the Priest in charge.

Father Clifford is a man who cares about his fellow man, who causes people to think, who isn't judgmental, who is encouraging, who chooses to do the right thing and who takes the time to build relationships. And through these relationships he helps people to make the right choices.

Father MacAnally on the other hand is a Priest who likes the power of his position and ordering people around.

The contrast between the two is marked and we can't help but like Father Clifford, all good shows have someone you like and someone you hate. But this show reminded us what we like and what we don't like in the church, and people in general. We like, we're drawn to someone who's more concerned about relationship rather than giving orders. When I speak of relationship I'm not speaking about building a relationship with Chris and I, but rather with the Originator of relationships.

God is a Triune God. He's very clear that He desires relationship. And like all relationships, building a relationship with Him requires time, effort and attention.

On the road again.

Today I will arrive in Plains MT to teach the Art of Hearing God with my friend Rob. Been looking forward to this class. I'm getting more and more comfortable teaching and sharing with a group of people I have only just met. This will also be the largest class I've taught.

So two weeks ago I gave you some highlights from the Understanding Dreams and Visions teacher training I attended in Dallas. The Art of Hearing God is the prerequisite class. It was life changing for both Chris and I. For those of you that are curious I've added this link to the promo video for the The Art of Hearing God class. Racer X

If you haven't seen Speed Racer, I am about to give away a major part of the plot. You have my permission to miss this post if you have not yet seen the movie. OK, are you ready??? Racer X is Speeds older brother. Are you shocked. I know.... so was I.

I was sitting there thinking about the movie, about Racer X, as his alias watching the Grand Prix that Speed is just about to win. He sees the win before it happens, because he's seeing Speed in the groove, completely in sink with the Holy Spirit, doing the impossible, totally unstoppable. Blowing away the competition. Leaving them in the dust or in small little pieces. In that moment, he is proud of his little brother. Proud because he sees that he has come into his own, that he is truly an artist behind the wheel, that he has made a difference simply by not giving in to the darkness that wants to control his world. I realized that Speed couldn't have done what he'd done if his brother hadn't made a sacrifice 10 years earlier. Without his brothers sacrifice the path that Speed was on wouldn't have been laid.

And that made me understand a concept that was first introduced to me by the Art of Hearing God - That what we do today, what we pour into people creates a way for them in the future. Put another way, our successes, and our failures, lay the groundwork for other people. Bill Johnson of Bethel Church in Redding calls this concept living for a generation you will never see. Who are the people that have laid the ground work in your life? What groundwork are you laying for others to succeed?

Speed Racer

I loved Speed Racer as a kid. I think it was Speed's character, desire to do the right thing and sense of justice that attracted me. A couple of nights ago, Chris brought home Speed Racer the movie from the library. Not one of his favorites but he knows that I really like it, so he brought it home. Yes, I am a lucky girl! We watched it together and I was reminded again how much I like the movie. This afternoon I watched the final race scene again, and consciously realized why I like it so much, besides all those things previously mentioned.

In the final race scene, when Speed is in the cockpit and is getting ready, the flag has not yet fallen nor has the starting gun gone off, there is a montage of all of his enemies which subtly shifts to a montage of all of his supporters, all those who are for him. It struck me that this is what the Great Cloud of Witnesses must look like. There are those who are watching us that desire our downfall, some that even hate us, some that are looking to profit regardless of the impact on us. And then there are those who are for us. They love us, support us, challenge us, partner with us and stand by us. They are the ones cheering us on. They are the ones who's voices are loudest. And they are the ones who count.

My favorite segment is when he is stalled in the bowl, the Gray Ghost has just been flushed, literally and figuratively, and Speed is seemingly out of the race. Hearing/remembering his brothers words from many years ago, he listens with his heart to the car. Communing with it. Listening, feeling, sensing for what she needs so that they can get back in the race - because they aren't done yet. And then... he connects, the Mock 6 roars to life and he uses the place of his despair to catapult him, not only back into the race, but he gains momentum a renewed focus and determination. He is unstoppable. From this place of communion, not just with his car, but with every fiber of his being, moving in a way that everyone recognizes is special, and from that place, energized in a way that wouldn't have been possible without those trials, he goes on to win the race.

This is a picture to me of how we look when we have connected with the Holy Spirit. When we are moving not by instinct but far more than those words can convey. We know what to do and how to move before we need to. Time slows down, we are poetry in motion. We are unstoppable. This is the place I desire to live in moment to moment, not occasionally but in every action, word, thought and deed. Can you imagine how the races of our lives would look? I can. We'd be unstoppable.

The past few weeks I've been thinking about stuff Chris and I have dealt with, lived through and grown through the pass 10 years or so. When we were first plunged, unwillingly I might note, into some of our trials, we felt like we were in the desert. Today, I can look back at the growth we've experienced and am actually thankful for those painful experiences. Even more so when I am seeing new possibilities opening up for others to benefit from our growth experiences. In may ways that makes the pain we endured worth every bit of it. Love that someone else will be able to stand on our shoulders and have their desert time cut short because of our experiences.

When Chris and I began dating, one of our major topics was the dissolution of my previous marriage. When I married, I had married for life. It became apparent that my former husband had different ideas and the only course of action was a divorce. I can remember the day I was listening to a radio program as I ironed my yellow skirt and I came face to face with the inevitable. I stomped my little foot and told God that if I had to do this then He better make sure that someone, somehow someway could benefit from my experience. He, in His grace and mercy has been faithful to do just that, many times. In my widest dreams I never imagined that my conversations with Chris would lead him to be able to help someone very close to me maneuver through a painful divorce.

Earlier this week a friend emailed with the news that she had an ultrasound, brought on because of a nasty fall off a ladder than put both wrists in casts for about 3 months. The ultrasound found an ovarian tumor, and she undergoes surgery on Wednesday. When this whole thing started with the falling off a ladder, she never imagined all the positive things that would come from that accident.

If I stop to think about it, this is the reason why I teach the Art of Hearing God. If my experiences can help someone avoid something I've done, or move them in some positive way because of my experiences, then all that I've endured, all that I have learned is so worth it.
